Dotwork — rhythm written in dots

Dot by dot
—

One dot means very little. A few begin to create a rhythm. Dozens can form a line, a shadow or a structure. Thousands can create an entire image. This is what dotwork is about, a form emerging from something very simple. From individual points that only begin to work together when there are enough of them. Up close, you see the dots. From the right distance, an image appears.

ON / OFF
‍
In dotwork, it is not only the size of the dots that matters, but also the space between them. Their density is, in a sense, a study of rhythm. A dot. A gap. A dot. A gap. It is somewhat reminiscent of a binary system — 1, 0, 1, 0...

‍
It takes time

Dotwork is a technique that requires patience from both the tattoo artist and the person being tattooed. It cannot be rushed. Every single dot has to be placed with focus. It can be a rather meditative way of working. Repetition allows you to find a rhythm, but it does not mean working automatically. You still have to control the depth, spacing and maintain the structural order of the design. Ultimately, the whole composition emerges from something that is almost nothing in itself. From a single dot.
