There is no effective way to completely avoid pain. You can prepare for the session, get enough sleep, eat well and make sure you are feeling good, but ultimately, you simply have to go through it. The pain appears, lasts for a few hours and passes. And then, very quickly, you stop thinking about it.

Jon Kabat-Zinn — Mindfulness Meditation for Pain Relief: Practices to Reclaim Your Body and Your Life
Pain is not only a physical experience. Our emotions, attention and the way we interpret what is happening also influence it. Jon Kabat-Zinn explores how mindfulness practice can help us relate to pain and suffering differently. It is an interesting read in the context of tattooing, a situation in which we consciously accept temporary pain, knowing that both its cause and intensity will eventually pass.
Christophe André — Meditation Every Day
A more general book about mindfulness, presence and consciously experiencing what is happening here and now. It is particularly interesting in the context of pain because it explores how we can change our relationship with a difficult experience rather than simply trying to push it away.
