Blackwork and blackout tattoos are becoming increasingly common in public spaces. Large, solid areas of black on the arms, legs and other parts of the body are no longer something unusual. Why? As tattooing has become more popular, more and more people have started getting tattooed. Sometimes they were well-considered projects, and sometimes decisions made under the influence of impulse or simply because the tattoo seemed like a good idea at the time. A tattoo may be done by an experienced artist. It may have been created a long time ago, when tastes and the way someone viewed their own body were completely different. Sometimes several days are enough to realise that a tattoo was not a good decision. And sometimes, over the years, more and more tattoos simply appear. One next to another, one on top of another, in different styles. At some point, there is no longer enough space on the skin, and instead of a coherent whole, visual chaos begins to appear.
Sometimes less means less
Blackout can be a way of bringing order to what already exists. It is not always about covering one specific tattoo. Sometimes you need to „quiet” a larger area of skin to get rid of visual excess. A black area can create a new, simpler composition. You don't have to add another design (yet) :) You don't have to look for another idea to fill the empty space. Sometimes you can simply „remove” something from the visual chaos.
Blackout is not a shortcut
A large black tattoo may look very simple. Technically, it is not. Covering a large area of skin with an even layer of black requires time, the right technique and experience. With cover-ups, there is another issue: an existing tattoo lies underneath the black ink. That's why a blackout is not always perfect — it simply is what it is. Sometimes additional sessions are needed, and sometimes they aren't.
This tattoo is not for everyone
Blackout requires a certain level of commitment. A large amount of black ink can feel overwhelming to some people. It is not a decision that can easily be undone. The process may require many hours of tattooing, several sessions and patience. You also have to accept that the black area will simply become part of your body. That is why, before starting such a project, it is worth thinking carefully not only about what you want to get rid of, but also about what you want to be left with.
CalmnessBlackout is not about adding, but about subtracting. Skin that once carried many different stories is reduced to a simple, powerful gesture. There is a calm.
